If you've been expecting any sort of explanation from me, I'm sorry to say that Scorn's story is deeper and more ambiguous than even From Software's games. It's an incomprehensible story from beginning to end, and it relies mainly on environments to try to explain the story to the player. If you've tried games like Limbo or Inside you'll be able to understand what I mean here, but it's a lot deeper than those!
Scorn is primarily inspired by the work of Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who is best known for his images that blend the human body with machines, an art style known as "biomechanics". If your memory is trying to tell you that you've seen drawings like this before, then yes, you did in the Alien movie series where H.R.A. Giger is responsible for creating the Xenomorph monsters and their world.
Ebb Software studio also drew a lot of ideas from the work of Zdzisław Beksiński, a Polish artist and sculptor who specialized in the field of dystopian surrealism. Last year we saw Bloober Team take a lot of inspiration from Beksiński's work on The Medium, and now it's happening with Scorn.
Scorn's story is not long. The game only requires you about 6-7 hours to complete it, and believe me when I tell you that by the end of the game's events you will have more questions instead of the expected answers. Will we see a second part, or will the studio leave our imagination to decipher this world? Although I was very involved with the story, my main problem with it is that the game unfortunately doesn't even make any kind of attempt to explain it.

Game story
If there's one thing that can draw you to Scorn, it's its world. You wake up in a strange, scary, and sickening world with no information about what brought you to this place, and why the main character looks like that!
The game doesn't explain anything to you, but literally throws you into a gloomy, unknown world. But the thing I was able to deduce was that this world was the foundation of a powerful and ancient civilization that was able to build a lot of monuments and huge areas. For some reason, now that all this technical progress has been merged with bodies and body parts in a disgusting way, our main character has become a part of this merger and we must try to do anything to get out of this world.
Each Scorn is an art that you can put as your desktop wallpaper. Although the world is disgusting, it is beautiful at the same time, and I cannot help but be impressed by the beauty of the designs presented by the Ebb Software studio, especially since the game graphics are very realistic in terms of designing blood and body parts scattered around you everywhere.
My only complaint about the design language of this world is the great similarity between each region and the next. Although the world is graphically beautiful and the creative direction taken by Ebb Software studio is one of the most amazing, every area of the game is more or less the same as the one before it. Even when the game can take you to a whole new place with different graphical details, it will already be nearing its end and you have about an hour to finish it!
I suspect that some of the previous demos of the game had a lot of encounters with enemies which gave some players the idea that it was a horror shooter experience or something, but the truth is that Scorn is far from that.
The game mainly focuses on solving puzzles. You will visit many areas throughout your journey in the game, and each area has a major puzzle that needs to be solved in order to complete your mission and move to the next stage. To solve this main puzzle, you have to solve a bunch of smaller sub-puzzles and during that time you'll find some enemies that you'll encounter in different parts of the environment.
Most of the puzzles were very good and needed a lot of brain work and prolonged thinking in order to understand what the game required of you, but at other times I felt bored, especially since some of the puzzles were very vague, and understanding them required more time than solving them!
In terms of enemies, there is not much variety. There are 3 main enemy types throughout most of the game, with a lone boss encounter at the end. Despite how different and beautiful the design of these enemies is, I was expecting or wanting more than that especially since this world could have been exploited to create a huge amount of diverse enemies that were in line with the design language.
Speaking of the enemies, in the second half of the game there is a giant monster that is introduced and you have to solve the puzzles around it in order to be able to complete the game. Unfortunately this monster was not exploited in any way, and was just an observer watching what you do. Yes it freaked me out sometimes, but the level of terror would probably have increased dramatically if he had a turn by attacking you or playing hide and seek with you at that point where you have to avoid him in any way.
The game offers you 4 weapons, one of which you solve some puzzles with, and the rest you use to fight enemies. The weapon design is gruesome, a fusion of flesh and bone and bizarre robotic design. Believe me when I tell you that you will feel uncomfortable seeing one of these weapons on the screen in front of you.
Another problem that you face in the game is the save system. The system is so sterile that the game can set you back 5 to 10 minutes if you die, which means you have to face the same enemies and solve the same puzzles you solved before dying again. I only died about twice in the game, but it's an annoying save system that will make the experience tedious for people who aren't gamers or don't have a quick reaction.
