Game story

As for the story, the game initially seems par for the course as an anime princess fights a demon king - you know the drill. The Path of the Midnight Sun does not shy away from this trope; If anything, it tends to self-satire cheek-and-tongue with little difficulty. I counted at least three lines of "oops, princess," where one character was trying to mock another. The first time it made me laugh, the third time it felt like trying hard.

But for the most part, the game's character is really likable. You mostly play with three different characters that make up a party of six. Each of these characters is unique and well-rounded, as are the relationships you can foster between them. If you want the two princesses to unite their two countries by falling in love, you can do that. If you want the Useless Horseman (as one of the main characters is referred to) just to crush the hell out of everyone and make everyone hate him, more power to you. However, doing so will punish you, as the negativity will begin to take its toll on his mind.

The mind is an incredibly interesting and somewhat underutilized mechanic. The idea is that in-game events—whether it's a fight with the queen, killing your fellow countrymen, or simply skipping a meal—affect your characters' mental health. This, in turn, affects their mana generation, which can make fights more difficult than they need to be, especially since the mana pool drain resets at the start of a fight. Unfortunately (or not, as the case may be), restoring sanity as part of your daily self-care routine is all too easy, and this punishment is almost never seen if you know what you're doing.
